Another week of school....gone!!!!?????
The latest news from our home to yours...

Chris and I left early this morning and run up to Purcellville, just like I did with Mark and Josh last week. The day was slightly warmer and more sunny, and our total ride time was less than 6 minutes longer than last week.
I attribute the added time to the slow/stops and restarts for taking a few pictures, something I've been meaning to do on this route for a while. There are 4 more pictures on the web site in the photo news, or archives if you're reading this way out of date!
Chris is a strong rider, absolutely killing me on climbs. I can hold my own with him on flats I think, and I bury him going downhill, but he can kill me on a climb. There are plenty of climbs on the ride, and my omputer recorded 22% grades both uphill and down. It was a great ride though, fantastic weather, and Main Street Wings after the ride.
This ride puts me close to 1070 miles for the year, only 140 miles short of my total for 2005. I blew a spoke on a ride Saturday, and the repaired wheel held up fine today, but it needs to be re-laced over the winter.
Tomorrow I have to run Terri to Bolling AFB for an appointment, and then I'm supposed to ride with Mark, and maybe his girlfriend Adrian on Wednesday.
Well, I just read the "12 rules to dating Samantha." Now I think that I'll never date. Or, go anywhere fun with a frind who's a guy. So to all of you guys out there reading this that wish to date me(as if), sorry.
Yay!! I figured it out! Let's see if I can remember how to later.

As usual we enjoyed participating in the ride. I talked to Butch at ALAM last week, and he asked if I could help with traffic for the new 5K run that they added to the schedule. We arrived at Mike & Annie's Friday evening, got some vittles, and got to bed fairly early. We left about 6:30 Saturday morning to load up our snacks and coolers for the riders, then drove over to one of the busy intersections that the runners would have to navigate. That went fine, but got a little hectic as the runners were coming back and the riders were heading out. Once we were sure that everyone got through safely, we headed out to Taneytown.
We had everything with us except the table and tent, so we broke some of the things out and waited for one of the support guys (Tim, I think?) to bring those out. We met our radio guy and he stayed with us all day. Casey got to join us since it wasn't supposed to get too hot, and she enjoyed being with us.
The riders came in small bunches or sometimes alone, and everyone that came in early on was having a good time. Some of the riders that came in later looked like they had taken on more than they thought, a feeling that Terri and I know very well. Only three riders required rides back to the start from our spot though, 39 miles proving to be enough for one day.
We packed up after the coarse was clear and were back and unloaded before 4 p.m.. Back at the Rehfeld home, we were treated to Annie's fried chicken and crabs, a treat that I hold dear!
We came home early on Sunday so that Jason and Sam could attend the kickoff for the youth group and choir season at church. It was a busy but fun weekend!
Yesterday I met my friend Mark after everyone else was gone, and we headed out to Purcellville to ride one of my favorite routes. 35 miles with 2400+ feet of climbing. We met Josh (friend of Mark's, although I sort of know him) out there, and between the two of us we about killed Mark. Post-ride was wings at Main Street Wings, where Josh tried to kill himself with a sauce they lovingly refer to as "D.O.A.". They didn't have any of the spinach salad specials for some reason, so Josh couldn't be sure of the job and decided to downgrade to the "Hot" sauce.
Terri and I bowled last night, with Terri bowling very consistently, and me having to work hard to get my game under control.
Jason is spending a couple of days after school this week as he tries to make both the drill team and color guard in his A.F.J.R.O.T.C. program.

Kids are back to school this week and they both seem pretty excited so far. Sam is back with old friends and Jason is learning the ropes of high school. It looks to me like Sam's homework load may increase, and Jason's may actually decrease, especially if he keeps up with things.
The birdies are doing great and their micro-macaw personalities are starting to show. They are both learning "step up" and "down" commands pretty well, and Picasso came to me on command twice today. Not flying, wings are clipped, and there was a raisin involved, but that's what works!
Terri is just back from a couple of days out of town, and next week will be normal again. I think. There's a picnic at church on Sunday, back to school night for Sam on Monday, bowling on Tuesday...you get the idea. What's normal, anyway?
I'm tweaking the web site more and more as we go, trying to make everything as smooth as possible. I put all the links in one place today with a nice menu. Most of them are mine, although I got Terri's computer security stuff in there. Check it out, there will be more added as I get input from the other 3 Wahls. My aim is to make it so that whatever you're looking for on our site, you can find it with as few steps as possible and without needing a bloodhound to find it.
Speaking of dogs with noses that work for a living, Boomer was recently featured on a Baltimore news section, and Jason was there to take part. Here's the link to the video. Got to watch for Jason, he only shows up for a minute. Mike and Zeus were down in North Carolina last week (I think, my days are confused) for Zeus to go to school.
That's all for now, I'm supposed to have a ride lined up with two bike shop guys in the morning. Skinny bike shop guys.

With Jason working on his room (he finished, yay!) Terri and I took Sam to the bird shop after we picked up prescriptions. We knew that they didn't have any more green cheek conures, but that there was some birds that were similar. As it turned out the three they had together were painted conures, which are apparently fairly rare in the pet trade. Cute little buggers they are! The painted is slightly smaller than the green cheek, and similar in coloration and personality.
We ended up taking one of them home and have tentatively named him *Picasso. I thought that since Weeble had only been here a couple of days, they might get along well enough to share a cage. They are also within a couple of weeks of each other in age, Weeble was hatched June 10, Picasso May 23.
On the floor they went for introductions. Some minor squabbling was quickly settled. The played a little then took a nap when we went out to eat. When we got home they were puffed up together and eager to come play. On the table they played with their hand toys and at one point Weeble picked up a piece of bright green straw and took it half way across the table to get Picasso to play too. They are instant buddies and are already preening each other.
Now it's just a matter of keeping them socialized with people.
*Names are pending DNA results, but I sorta like 'em!
